Taxpayers Impacted by Hurricanes in South Can Request Waiver of Penalties, Interest

The Montana Department of Revenue will waive penalties and up to $100 of interest for certain taxpayers who have difficulty meeting individual income tax filing and payment deadlines due to recent hurricanes in Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi.

The Montana Department of Revenue believes that those affected by Hurricane Ike and Hurricane Gustav can demonstrate “reasonable cause” for a waiver of penalties and up to $100 of interest under the department’s administrative rules.

Victims of these hurricanes who also have a Montana filing requirement should do the following:

  • File their tax return or report as soon as possible
  • Pay any tax due (and interest, if applicable) as soon as possible
  • Attach a statement requesting a waiver of penalty and interest, and detailing the specific circumstances that prevented them from filing and paying timely in Montana

Anyone who needs additional information on these waivers is asked to call the Montana Department of Revenue toll-free at (866) 859-2254 (in Helena, 444-6900).
