Figure 14 is a bar chart showing past year substance dependence or abuse among adults aged 18 or older, by serious mental illness in 2002. Among adults with SMI in 2002, 23.2 percent were dependent on or abused alcohol or illicit drugs, while the rate among adults without SMI was only 8.2 percent. Among adults with SMI, 9.6 percent were dependent on or abused illicit drugs, while the rate among adults without SMI was 2.1 percent. Among adults with SMI, 18.0 percent were dependent on or abused alcohol, while among those without SMI the rate was 7.0 percent.
