OPM Report Shows Veterans Continue Entering Federal Workforce

Employment of Veterans in Federal Government: Fiscal Year 2007

Washington, DC - U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Acting Director Michael Hager today released a report to Congress which shows the number of veterans and disabled veterans working for the Federal Government continues to grow.

The report titled Employment of Veterans in Federal Government: Fiscal Year 2007 outlines Federal employment statistics in fiscal year 2007 and provides comparisons with fiscal 2006 data.  It shows the total number of veterans employed by the Federal Government increased to 462,744 in FY 2007, while the number of disabled veterans holding Federal jobs increased to103,180 in FY 2007.

"OPM is pleased with the progress we continue to make in answering President Bush's call to help our veterans serve their country further, through Federal civilian employment," Acting Director Hager said. "The American people benefit as more and more veterans join the ranks of those serving as dedicated civil servants."

Highlights of the Employment of Veterans report include:

· Veterans, as a percentage of all employees, increased from 25.4 percent in FY 2006 to 25.5 percent in FY 2007.

· Full-time permanent (FTP) employment disabled veterans, as a percentage of all FTP employment, increased from 5.8 percent in FY 2006 to 6.1 percent in FY 2007.

· Veteran new hires increased from 50,108 in FY 2006 to 52,452 in FY 2007.

· New hires of FTP disabled veterans increased from 7,561 in FY 2006 to 8,401 in FY 2007.

OPM actively assists veterans through the agency's Veterans' Outreach Offices, established to work directly with returning veterans interested in Federal civilian employment opportunities. These offices are located at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX, and at Fort Carson, CO. Thousands of military personnel and their families have received information and services at these facilities.
