What do I do if my
Research Supervisor changes?
If you are expecting to change, or have changed your Research Supervisor, you must notify the LRP by e-mail (lrp@nih.gov) or phone (866-849-4047). The NIH Institute or Center (IC) that funded your LRP contract will review the information, and, if approved, your new Research Supervisor will be added to the LRP system so that he/she may complete your quarterly Service Verifications. |
What do I do if my Research Activities change?
If you are expecting changes to your research assignment, you must contact the NIH LRP Help Line by e-mail (lrp@nih.gov) or phone (866-849-4047) to notify NIH of the changes. You will be required to submit a detailed description of your new research activities. The new description should be comparable, in detail and length, to the original research activities document you submitted with your LRP application. The NIH Institute or Center (IC) that funded your LRP contract will then determine if your new research project continues to meet their funding priorities.
If your change is approved by the NIH IC, your new Research Activitiesstatement will be added to the NIH LRP system.
If your change is not approved, you will be notified of the decision and your contract will be terminated,

If I am an NIH LRP Participant and I am planning to change employers, what do I do?
Your NIH LRP award is portable and can move with you to a new employer provided that you continue to meet the same basic eligibility criteria and your proposed change is approved by the NIH Institute or Center (IC) that funded your LRP application. The NIH Institute or Center (IC) that funded your LRP contract will then determine if your new research project continues to meet their funding priorities. In general, major changes in the original research plan are not allowed.
If you are expecting to change institutions, you should send an email to the LRP (lrp@nih.gov) requesting instructions on how to submit a Change of Institution (COI) application. When you submit a COI application, your LRP contract will be temporarily suspended and you will be asked to provide contact information for your new Research Supervisor and new Organizational Contact. You will also be asked to submit a new Research Activities document and an updated Biosketch. We will contact your new colleagues for information in support of your move and forward your completed COI application to the NIH IC that funded your LRP application.
If your COI application is approved, the LRP system will be updated with the new information and your contract will be placed back into Active status.
If your COI application is not approved, you will be notified of the decision and your contract will be terminated.

If I am an applicant and I plan to change employers, what do I do?
If you expect to change employers after you have submitted your NIH LRP application, please contact the LRP by e-mail (lrp@nih.gov) and provide details (research project description, funding sources, and new institution) of the proposed change in your employment situation. If you continue to meet basic eligibility criteria, and if the NIH Institute or Center (IC) assigned to review your LRP application agrees to consider the new information, you will be asked to submit a Change of Institution (COI) application. The COI application should include contact information for your new Research Supervisor and new Organizational Contact, along with a new Research Activities document and an updated Biosketch. The new Research Activities document should be comparable, in detail and length, to the original research activities document you submitted with your LRP application. We will contact your new colleagues for information in support of your move and submit your completed COI application to the NIH IC assigned to review your LRP application. The LRP selection process will continue based on the new information.
If the NIH IC that is reviewing your LRP application determines that the changes you are requesting do not fit their funding priorities or they are unable to review your application before funding decision are due, and you choose to continue your plans to change employers, your LRP application will be withdrawn and you will be encouraged to apply again in the future. |
If I am a Participant and am unable to complete my full two-year commitment to conduct research, what happens?
Participants who are unable to maintain a 50% level of effort toward the approved research activities for the complete duration of their LRP contract may terminate their contract. However, this may constitute a Breach of Contract. Please refer to the section on Breach of Contract in the LRP Applicant Information Bulletin (under About the Programs) and your LRP contract for more information. |
If I am a participant, can I move to a for-profit institution?
Any research conducted at a for-profit institution would be considered ineligible and would constitute a Breach of Contract. Please refer to the section on Breach of Contract in the LRP Applicant Information Bulletin (under About the Programs) and your LRP contract for more information. |
