Home-Based Business FAQ

Can I operate a business from home?

Yes. In fact, experts estimate that as many as 20 percent of new small business enterprises are operated out of the owner's home. Local SBA offices and state chambers of commerce can provide pertinent information on how to manage a home-based business.

I am thinking of investing in a work-at-home business opportunity that I found on the Internet, but I have heard that it may not be a legitimate company to deal with. How can I find out whether or not others have had complaints about this business?

Contact the following organizations to see if they have received any complaints regarding this business opportunity:

  • The Federal Trade Commission works for the consumer to prevent fraud and deception. Call 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357)
  • The Attorney General's office in your state or the state where the company is located.
  • Your local consumer protection offices.
  • Your local Better Business Bureau.
  • Your local postmaster. The U.S. Postal Service investigates fraudulent mail practices

If I am running a business out of my home, am I required to have a dedicated business telephone line?

There are obvious advantages to having your own business phone number or phone line (one being that your business will be listed in the yellow pages); however, some telephone companies require that you have a separate business telephone line if you are indeed operating a business out of your home. You should call your local phone company to find out what requirements apply in your area.
