NDEP has finalized a three-year strategic plan to guide the program through 2008 to 2010. Recognizing that NDEP has a wealth of diabetes control and prevention products, the strategic plan will focus on promotion to raise awareness of these resources among people with diabetes, people at risk for developing diabetes, and health care professionals. The strategic plan directs NDEP to continue its focus through the following breakdown: 50 percent on type 2 diabetes prevention, 40 percent on diabetes control, and 10 percent on the economic and business case of diabetes.
While NDEP’s Steering Committee provides overall direction in the development of the strategic plan, NDEP work groups have primary responsibility for creating specific goals and tactics to drive the plan, as well as play an active role in promoting NDEP resources. For more information and updates on the NDEP strategic plan, stay tuned to News & Notes.
2008 is shaping up to be a very exciting year for NDEP, with groundbreaking promotions and new and revised publications and resources to look forward to.
Here’s some of what to look for in 2008:
Promotions:
- Super Bowl Promotion- Super Bowl Sunday is the biggest pizza delivery day of the year, and NDEP - with the help of Diabetes Prevention & Control Programs in Arizona, Kentucky, Washington State, and West Virginia - is teaming up with pizza restaurants in select markets to launch a pilot program designed to raise awareness about NDEP and our wealth of free diabetes resources. Starting on Sunday, January 20, and again on Super Bowl Sunday, our pizza restaurant partners will place One Call, One Click print PSAs on pizza boxes that they will deliver during those high traffic days, allowing NDEP to reach out to consumers in a unique way.
Resources:
- Power to Prevent: A Family Lifestyle Approach to Diabetes Prevention – Developed by the African
American/African Ancestry Work Group, this product will include the message of
empowering the African American community to make history now by turning the
rising tide of type 2 diabetes.
- Re-launch of Mas que comida, es vida Campaign – Mas
que comida ,es vida (It’s More than Food, it’s life.) is an
educational campaign developed for Hispanics/Latinos to debunk many of the
misconceptions associated with healthy eating and provide ways to adopt a
tasty and nutritional meal plan. Written in Spanish and English, it will
feature the recipe booklet Ricas recetas
para personas con diabetes y sus familias (Tasty Recipes for People with Diabetes and Their
Families) with food ideas specifically designed for
Hispanics/Latinos.
- Capacity Building for Diabetes
Outreach: A Comprehensive toolkit for Organizations Serving Asian and Pacific
Islander Communities – This
innovative toolkit provides information for ways to better promote diabetes
prevention and control among Asian American and Pacific Islander communities.
The resource provides methods to reach a population at high risk for diabetes,
while overcoming cultural and linguistic barriers.
- Road to Health/El camino hacia la buena salud toolkit – Designed for African
Americans and Hispanics/Latinos, two groups at high risk for diabetes, The Road to Health/El camino hacia la
Buena salud toolkit provides resources for diabetes prevention
education that focuses on healthy eating and increased physical activity. The
toolkit was developed with the input of Hispanic/Latino and African American
community health workers to enhance its potential effectiveness and cultural
relevance.
- Re-launch of The Power to Control Diabetes is in Your Hands Community Outreach toolkit – The original goal of the Power to Control kit was to promote new Medicare benefits to organizations working with the older adult
community. The revised, online-only kit will now focus on providing
information and tools to help organizations promote the importance of
comprehensive diabetes control to their targeted communities. Materials will
have a broader reach and will be presented in a way that can be easily adapted
for older adult minority groups.
- Updated: Small Steps. Big Rewards. Your GAME PLAN For Preventing Type 2 Diabetes Health
Care Provider toolkit – The GAME PLAN toolkit provides Health Care Professionals with the latest evidence-based
tools and techniques to help patients start their own personalized diabetes
prevention programs. The revised toolkit will contain much of the same
material as the original GAME PLAN - including information about the risk of
developing diabetes and how to implement a program to prevent or delay the
onset of the disease, how to set goals, track progress, and implement a
walking program, among others - as well as updated information for
patients.
- Spanish Translation: Small Steps. Big Rewards. Your GAME PLAN to Prevent Type 2
Diabetes: Information for Patients – The GAME PLAN toolkit
for patients is being translated into Spanish and provides Spanish-speaking
patients with information and resources on how to prevent or delay the onset
of type 2 diabetes, including: information on how to create and implement a
fitness program and information on monitoring and recording food and drink
intake.
The resources will become available throughout the course of the year. Please check www.YourDiabetesInfo.org/new/new.htm or look for an announcement in an upcoming edition of News & Notes to find out when these products become available.
Matters of the heart are on the minds of many during February, and NDEP is no exception. In February, NDEP will support American Heart Month through its Control Your Diabetes. For Life. campaign. NDEP will distribute two feature articles emphasizing the importance of helping a sweetheart manage their diabetes to reduce their risk for serious complications, including heart
disease, and to live a long, healthy life. “Matters of the Heart: Support A Loved One with Diabetes” is a general audience piece, while “Dealing with Diabetes: How to Support a Loved One with the Disease” is geared towards an African American audience.
March 25 is American Diabetes Alert Day, a day devoted to raising awareness about diabetes, spreading the word about who is at risk and identifying those who may be at risk but don’t know it. NDEP will recognize the day by promoting the Small Steps. Big Rewards. Prevent type 2 Diabetes campaign, by helping those with pre-diabetes take steps to lose weight and lower their risk for developing type 2 diabetes while there is still time to prevent it from developing.
