License was issued in December 20, 1956 for 5600 lbs of thorium not to exceed 4% by weight for manufacturing. The company is still owned by the original licensee. The site was cited by an AEC inspector for illegally burying residual thorium within 3 inches of the surface-requirements at the time require on-site burial greater than 4 feet below the surface. License expired February 29, 1964. The maximum soil contact measurement was 160 uR/hr. Characterization plan sent to Los Angeles County of Feb 6, 2006 for approval. The plan was approved by Los Angeles County on Jul 16, 2007 by LA County. Clean up criteria for Th-232 was approved using site specific parameters. The site has undergone limited remediation, however, CDPH visited the site on February 28, 2008 to perform confirmatory surveys and additional contaminated areas were identified. The maximum value obtained during the survey was 70k cpm on contact with the soil using a 2" by 2" NaI detector. Contractor is performing additional characterization of the site to support additional remediation activities. The anticipated completion date is the end of the calendar year 2008.
