The 'Piney Point' phosphate mine was historically a producer of phosphate fertilizer for agriculture. Production has ceased at the plant. The wet process phosphoric acid production plant was first licensed by the Florida Bureau of Radiation Control for the processing and disposal of technically-enhanced concentrations of naturally-occurring radioactive materials (TENORM) in 1989. TENORM occurs as radium scale (radium 226) in pipes and process equipment, and in the associated process-area soils. The Florida Bureau of Mine Reclamation administers a permit for the operation and closure of the phosphogypsum stack; the onsite repository for the mine spoils. The phosphogypsum stack also serves as the repository for TENORM contaminated equipment and soils. Piney Point Phosphates, Inc., went into bankruptcy and receivership in 2001. The Florida Bureau of Mine Reclamation has managed the site and the closure of the gypsum stack since that time. HRK Holdings, LLC who is now participating in the final closure, purchased the site.
