  1. What are National Public Lands Day Legacy Awards?
    Department of Defense provides funds to the National Environmental Education Foundation for National Public Lands Day (NPLD) - partnership projects on military lands open to the public for recreation. National Public Lands Day is a public/private partnership that last year garnered approximately 110,000 volunteers.  These volunteers and their community partners contributed $12 million worth of improvements to 1,300 sites in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam. In 2007, there were 34 military sites that participated in the event through the Legacy program.

  2. What is the date of National Public Lands Day this year?
    September 27, 2008

  3. Who is eligible for DOD funds?
    National Public Lands Day projects that take place on Department of Defense lands, including those managed by US Navy, US Marine Corps, US Army and US Air Force. Lands managed by the US Army Corps of Engineers are not eligible for Legacy funds.

  4. Can a civil contractor that works for DOD apply for funds?
    No, a civil contactor that works for DOD is not eligible for funds. However, a civil contractor can apply through an installation.

  5. When are the applications due?
    Each May or June. The applications for 2008 were due June 15, 2008.

  6. How much money per site is available?
    Each site can receive up to $6,500.
  7. What are the areas of emphasis for Legacy funds?
    Projects that emphasize natural or cultural resource restoration.

    For example, this could include tree or native vegetation planting; wildflower or native plant seeding; invasive plant removal or weeding; trash cleanup; wildlife habitat improvement or restoration activities; wetland, streamside or shoreline restoration; hiking trail building and/or maintenance; maintaining or restoring culturally significant areas, buildings, or structures;  interpretive signage installation; nature garden development; general beautification of lands and grounds; and others.

  8. When will awards be announced?
    The National Environmental Education Foundation announced awards in late July 2008. Thirty-seven installations will receive Legacy funding for their National Public Lands Day projects in 2008. Later in the year a report will be added to the website with information about each site and project.

  9. How is money distributed to the sites?
    The National Environmental Education Foundation will require invoices from successful applicants or their vendors.

  10. What is covered by Legacy funds?
    Funds may be used for tools and equipment, materials, and enhancements to land used by the public, but not for T-shirts, food or labor.

  11. When will funds be provided to approved sites?
    Funds for awarded sites are usually available by July.

  12. Do all NPLD events have to be held on September 27, 2008?
    Alternate dates for NPLD events may be allowed for those regions where weather conditions during September are prohibitive.  You must contact the National Environmental Education Foundation or the Legacy Program Officer if an alternate date is required.

  13. Can Legacy funds be used for signage?
    Some funding for signage may be allowable provided the signage is installed by the volunteers during the event. Requests for signage funding will be evaluated on a case by case basis.

  14. What are the responsibilities of the site manager after receiving funds?
    It is the responsibility of site managers to submit all invoices and an evaluation by November 1, 2008 unless there are extenuating circumstances. Awarded sites are required to complete an evaluation that will document the site improvements. Satisfactory evaluations will include detailed description of accomplishments and how the funds were spent. Pictures of the event are highly encouraged. Evaluations are forwarded to the DoD Legacy Office as project documentation for each site. 

  15. What resources does the National Environmental Education Foundation provide for DoD Legacy site managers?
    The National Environmental Education Foundation provides sites with access to a Site Manager's Manual, a Media Kit, free promotional posters and brochures, and items of appreciation for volunteers such as a downloadable volunteer recognition certificate and free commemorative posters for all volunteers.   16. Will gift cards from Home Depot and Lowes be available this year?
    Yes. Requests for gift cards will go out in July.

If multiple projects are planned, can a site submit more than one application?
Yes. However, there is a $6,500 limit per site, not per project.
