Federal GovernmentArchived Operating Status in the Washington, DC, Area

Posted on January 8, 1999 at 12:00 AM

the following message applies only to Friday, January 8, 1999

The federal government remains OPEN on Friday, January 8, 1999.

The National Weather Service advises that weather will improve throughout Friday afternoon, with sleet changing to rain as temperatures rise later in the day. Therefore, if the forecast remains as accurate for the remainder of today's weather as it has been through mid-day, weather and road conditions should somewhat improve rather than worsen as the day progresses.

Please do use extreme care in traveling, especially to the north and west of the Metropolitan area where heavier amounts of snowfall may accumulate, but there should be little or no additional snowfall in Washington, D.C. after mid-afternoon. As road and highway crews have time to work and temperatures rise, travel conditions should improve. The National Weather Service advises delaying travel until later in the day when conditions improve, if possible.

Additionally, Washington D.C. city government informs us that their offices, as is true for federal offices in the Washington D.C. Metropolitan area, will remain open today.
