Advisory Committee on Agriculture Statistics Meets

WASHINGTON, Feb. 8, 2005 - USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) announced today that the annual meeting of the Advisory Committee on Agriculture Statistics (ACAS) will take place in Washington, D.C., Feb. 22-23, 2005. Each year the committee meets to advise the Secretary of Agriculture and NASS on the scope, content and timing of surveys and the five-year census of agriculture.
"The 25-member committee represents a broad range of agricultural disciplines and interests," said Dr. Joseph Jen, Under Secretary for Research, Education and Economics. "Items to be discussed during the annual meeting this year include the lessons learned from the 2002 Census of Agriculture, NASS accomplishments in 2004, progress of NASS year-end surveys and reports, agriculture finance, and the 2007 Census of Agriculture."
Former Secretary Veneman appointed eight new members to serve on the ACAS;
MeeCee Baker, Harrisburg, PA; Patricia Berglund, Fargo, ND; Carl Brothers,
Stuttgart, AR; Terry Francl, Washington, D.C.; John Hays, Washington, D.C.;
Gene Nelson, College Station, TX; Kent Schescke, Indianapolis, IN; and
John Smylie, Milwaukee, WI. The Secretary also reappointed four members
to another two-year term. The remaining members' terms were not expiring
this year. Members are allowed to serve three two-year terms. For more

The Committee meeting is open to the public and will be held from 1 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 22, and 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 23, with an opportunity for public questions and comments at 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 23, at the Marriott Crystal City at Reagan National Airport, 1999 Jefferson Davis Highway, Arlington, Virginia. |
