The NIGMS Division of Minority Opportunities in Research (MORE) administers research and research training programs aimed at increasing the number of minority biomedical and behavioral scientists. For more information about the Division, see http://www.nigms.nih.gov/minority.

NIGMS is one of the National Institutes of Health in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. By supporting basic biomedical research and training nationwide, NIGMS lays the foundation for advances in disease diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

NIGMS’ René Retires

Long-time NIGMS employee Tony René retired this past spring after 50 years of government service. Dr. René was a dedicated mentor who played a pivotal role in the Institute’s efforts to increase the number of minority scientists. Hinton Award Nominations Sought

The American Society for Microbiology is soliciting nominations for the William A. Hinton Research Training Award. The award honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions toward fostering the research training of underrepresented minorities in microbiology. Nominations are due by October 1. Research Supplements to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research

NIH diversity supplements encourage research participation by—and mentoring of—individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, individuals with disabilities, and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. NIGMS will consider the support of more than one graduate student or postdoctoral fellow on a grant.

Research on Interventions that Promote Research Careers

The MORE Division has reannounced a program that tests assumptions on the effectiveness of interventions intended to increase interest, motivation, and preparedness for careers in biomedical research. Research on Causal Factors and Interventions that Promote and Support the Careers of Women in Biomedical and Behavioral Science and Engineering

NIH is supporting research on the causal factors explaining the career patterns of women in biomedical and behavioral science and engineering. The program aims to test the efficacy of programs designed to eliminate sex/gender disparities and to promote the careers of women in these fields.
