This material can be used to help children in school and home settings to prepare for natural and man-made disasters, respond safely to emergencies and recover from trauma.

Some of the following brochures are PDF (Portable Document Format) files. In order to open them you must have Adobe Acrobat Reader, which can be downloaded for free from the Adobe website.

For Parents and Educators

Facing Fear—Helping Young People Deal with Terrorism and Other Tragic Events: Facing Fear was developed to address a demand by educators and caregivers of children for materials to help children cope in uncertain times.

Helping Children Cope with Disaster: A guide for adults on how to help children deal with fears and anxieties in the wake of disaster.

Masters of Disaster: The American Red Cross, with generous support from the Allstate Foundation, has developed a curriculum that not only teaches students about disaster safety, but also helps teachers meet their required objectives.

Recommended Emergency Supplies for Schools: Drawn from lists created by the California Senate Select Committee on the Northridge Earthquake, Task Force on Education, August 1994.

Safety Watchers: These lessons provide resources for educators to conduct home fire safety lessons and activities for children of elementary school age.

For Children

Be Ready 1-2-3 Workbook: Helps children ages 5-8 learn about home fires, earthquakes, and winter storms through activities and demonstrations led by "experts" Cool Cat (Home Fires), Ready Rabbit (Winter Storms) and Disaster Dog (Earthquakes).

Disaster Preparedness Coloring Book: Designed for children ages 3-10 (and a parent or educator) to discuss disasters and ways to prepare for them.
