REGIONAL DIRECTOR

The Regional Director is appointed by the President and serves as the regional liaison for the Secretary of Health & Human Services in the region.

OFFICE FOR CIVIL RIGHTS

OCR ensures that people have equal access to HHS services without facing unlawful discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, age, or disability, and on a limited basis, sex or religion. OCR provides public education and technical assistance, investigates complaints, and conducts compliance reviews involving entities that receive HHS funds or assistance. OCR also ensures the privacy of people’s identifiable health information under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

OFFICE OF THE GENERAL COUNSEL

The Office of the General Counsel (OGC) is the legal team for the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), providing representation and legal advice on a wide range of issues. OGC supports the development and implementation of the Departmentʹs programs by providing the legal services to the Secretary of HHS and the organizationʹs various agencies and divisions.

OFFICE OF THE INSPECTOR GENERAL

The Office of Audit Services conducts financial and performance audits of HHS programs, operations, grantees, and contractors. The Office of Investigations conducts criminal, civil, and administrative investigations of allegations of wrongdoing in HHS programs or to HHS beneficiaries and of unjust enrichment by providers.

OFFICE OF PUBLIC HEALTH AND SCIENCE

REGIONAL HEALTH ADMINISTRATOR

The Office of Public Health and Science (OPHS) is the lead agency for coordinating the nation’s public health activities and includes the Surgeon General’s office and the 6,000-member U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. The Regional Health Administrator (RHA) is the senior regional medical officer representing and promoting the public health efforts of HHS. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is the Federal Government’s principal agency for protecting good health and providing essential human services. HHS provides direct services or income support to more than one in five Americans and administers other programs that affect all Americans. ADMINISTRATION ON AGING
AOA represents the concerns of older Americans and funds a range of social, health, and nutrition services to seniors that enable them to remain in their homes and avoid unnecessary nursing home care. AOA also funds state agencies on aging that provide services to the elderly.

ADMINISTRATION FOR CHILDRENAND FAMILIES
ACF promotes the economic and social well-being of families, children, individuals, and communities, including welfare reform (Temporary Assistance to Needy Families), child welfare, child abuse and neglect, foster care and adoption assistance, child support enforcement, child care, Head Start, runaway and homeless youth, the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, and social and economic self sufficiency for Native Americans.

AGENCY FOR TOXIC SUBSTANCES ANDDISEASE REGISTRY
ATSDR works to identify people at health risk because of their exposure to hazardous substances in the environment.It also evaluates relationships between hazardous substances in the environment and adverse human health outcomes and works to prevent or lessen adverse human health outcomes related to hazardous substances in the environment.

CENTERS FOR MEDICARE & MEDICAIDSERVICES
CMS administers health programs that serve more than 75 million Americans, including the Medicare program for seniors and disabled Americans, the Medicaid program for low-income children and families, and the State Children’s Health Insurance Program(SCHIP) to provide free or low-cost health insurance to children. CMS also monitors quality of care at Medicare and Medicaid facilities such as hospital and nursing homes and investigates complaints regarding care at health care facilities.

FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION
FDA is the public health agency charged with protected consumers by enforcing the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act and other related public health laws. FDA enforces regulations governing food safety, cosmetics,medicines and medical devices, health-related products such as microwave ovens, and feed and drugs for pets and farm animals. FDA also makes sure that products are labeled truthfully.

HEALTH RESOURCES AND SERVICESADMINISTRATION
HRSA assists communities in developing primary health care services for under served communities and vulnerable populations, including a network of community clinics and migrant clinics throughout the region.It assists states in developing systems for healthcare services for mothers and children, and prevention,early detection and treatment services for persons at risk for and living with HIV/AIDS. HRSA also directs programs relating to health professionals trainings institutions, including the National health Service Corps program.

The IHS operates a comprehensive health service delivery system for approximately 1.5 million of the nation’s two million American Indians and Alaska Natives.
