FDA ANNOUNCES FOOD SAFETY GRANTS
The Food and Drug Administration announced today that it is awarding
grants for innovative food safety projects to eleven state and local
regulatory agencies. This pilot grant program
is intended to complement, develop or improve
state and local food safety programs that may
also be used in other state or local
jurisdictions. These grants, which total
nearly $500,000, were awarded during Food
Safety Education Month as part of President
Clinton*s Food Safety Initiative.
The grants are for a one year period and were awarded in
four key areas: 1) inspection, 2) regulation and compliance,
3) information systems and 4) education and health information
dissemination.
The grants awarded and the grantees are:
- "Minimize /Eliminate Filth Organisms and Human Pathogens
from Seed Sprouts"; Florida Department of Agriculture and
Consumer Services, Division of Food Safety
- "Hands on HACCP Packaged for the Ready-to-Eat (RTE) Food
Industry Project"; Georgia Department of Agriculture,
Consumer Protection Division.
- "Food Worker certification Pilot Project for High School
Students"; Kentucky Cabinet for Health Services.
- "Integrated Food Safety Information Delivery System";
Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals.
- "Windows Based Information System for the State of
Missouri"; Jefferson Country , Missouri Health Center.
- "Risk-Based Assessment Program for Off-Site
Foodservice; Maricopa County, Arizona Environmental
Services Department, Environmental Health Division.
- "Food Safety for Festivals and Fundraisers-An
Instructional Web Site and Videotape"; McDonough Country
Illinois Health Department.
- "Training Program for Professional Sanitarians"; State
of Michigan Department of Agriculture
- "Assisted/Residential Living Facilities & Non-
Residential Meal Sites"; Rhode Island Department of
Health for Food Safety Standards Development &
Implementation.
- "Multi-language Audio Food Safety Education and Testing
Program"; Southwest Washington County, Washington
Health District.
- "Web Based Training for Inspection
of Apple Cider
Processing Plants"; Wisconsin Department of Agriculture,
Trade and Consumer Protection, Division of Food Safety.
