Figure 8.4 is titled "Past Year Substance Dependence or Abuse among Adults Aged 18 or Older, by Serious Mental Illness: 2003." It is a bar graph, where the horizontal axis represents illicit drug or alcohol, and the vertical axis represents the percentage with past year substance dependence or abuse. There are three categories of illicit drug or alcohol: any illicit drug, alcohol, and alcohol or any illicit drug. Within each of these categories, there is a bar for Had Past Year Serious Mental Illness, and a bar for Did Not Have Past Year Serious Mental Illness. For each illicit drug or alcohol and serious mental illness (SMI) combination, the percentage with past year substance dependence or abuse is as follows:

The percentage of adults with past year dependence or abuse of any illicit drug was 8.6% among persons with past year SMI, and 2.0% among persons without past year SMI.
The percentage of adults with past year dependence or abuse of alcohol was 17.0% among persons with past year SMI, and 6.7% among persons without past year SMI.
The percentage of adults with past year dependence or abuse of alcohol or any illicit drug was 21.3% among persons with past year SMI, and 7.9% among persons without past year SMI.
