Figure 8.3 is titled "Substance Use among Adults Aged 18 or Older, by Serious Mental Illness: 2003." It is a bar graph, where the horizontal axis represents substance use, and the vertical axis represents the percentage using. There are four categories of substance use and, within each of these categories, there is a bar for Had Past Year Serious Mental Illness, and a bar for Did Not Have Past Year Serious Mental Illness.

The percentage of adults with past year illicit drug use was 27.3% among persons with past year serious mental illness (SMI), and 12.5% among persons without past year SMI.
The percentage of adults with past month cigarette use was 44.2% among persons with past year SMI, and 25.2% among persons without past year SMI.
The percentage of adults with past month alcohol use was 53.2% among persons with past year SMI, and 53.9% among persons without past year SMI.
The percentage of adults with past month binge alcohol use was 28.9% among persons with past year SMI, and 23.5% among adults without past year SMI.
