Figure 8.1 is titled "Rates of Serious Mental Illness among Adults Aged 18 or Older, by Age: 2002 and 2003." It is a bar graph, with the following note below the graph: "Statistically significant differences (at 0.05 level) between 2002 and 2003 are denoted by '+.'" The horizontal axis represents age in years, and the vertical axis represents the percentage with past year serious mental illness. Within each age category, there is a bar for 2002 and a bar for 2003. For each age and year combination, the percentage of adults with past year serious mental illness (SMI) is as follows:

The percentage of persons aged 18 years or older with past year SMI was 8.3% in 2002 and 9.2% in 2003. This difference is significant at the 0.05 level.
The percentage of persons aged 18 to 25 years with past year SMI was 13.2% in 2002 and 13.9% in 2003.
The percentage of persons aged 26 to 49 years with past year SMI was 9.5% in 2002 and 10.4% in 2003. This difference is significant at the 0.05 level.
The percentage of persons aged 50 years or older with past year SMI was 4.9% in 2002 and 5.9% in 2003.
