Figure 7.8 is titled "Past Year Need for and Receipt of Specialty Treatment for Any Illicit Drug or Alcohol Use among Persons Aged 12 or Older: 2002 and 2003." It is a bar graph, where the horizontal axis represents illicit drugs or alcohol by year, and the vertical axis represents the number, in thousands, needing treatment in the past year. Within each illicit drug/alcohol and year category, the bar is separated into two sections corresponding to the receipt of specialty treatment and the lack thereof. For each substance, year, and receipt combination, the number needing specialty treatment is as follows:

The number, in thousands, needing and receiving specialty treatment for illicit drugs was 1,412 in 2002 and 1,103 in 2002.
The number, in thousands, needing but not receiving specialty treatment for illicit drugs was 6,335 in 2002 and 6,230 in 2003.
The number, in thousands, needing and receiving specialty treatment for alcohol was 1,549 in 2002 and 1,298 in 2003.
The number, in thousands, needing but not receiving specialty treatment for alcohol was 17,089 in 2002 and 16,917 in 2003.
The number, in thousands, needing and receiving specialty treatment for alcohol or illicit drugs was 2,346 in 2002 and 1,874 in 2003.
The number, in thousands, needing but not receiving specialty treatment for alcohol or illicit drugs was 20,465 in 2002 and 20,290 in 2003.
