Figure 7.5 is titled "Past Year Illicit Drug or Alcohol Dependence or Abuse among Persons Aged 12 or Older, by County Type: 2002 and 2003." It is a bar graph, with the following note below the graph: "Statistically significant differences (at 0.05 level) between 2002 and 2003 are denoted by '+.'" The horizontal axis represents county type, and the vertical axis represents the percentage dependent or abusing in the past year. County type is broken down into two groups, and then further broken down into five categories within those groups; Metropolitan Areas includes Large counties and Small counties, and Nonmetropolitan Areas includes Urbanized counties, Less Urbanized counties, and Rural counties. Within each county type there is a bar for 2002 and a bar for 2003. For each county type and year combination, the percentage dependent on or abusing illicit drugs or alcohol in the past year among persons aged 12 or older is as follows:

The percentage in large metropolitan counties with past year substance abuse or dependence was 9.5% in 2002 and 9.1% in 2003.
The percentage in small metropolitan counties with past year substance abuse or dependence was 9.7% in 2002 and 9.5% in 2003.
The percentage in urbanized nonmetropolitan counties with past year substance abuse or dependence was 8.6% in 2002 and 9.3% in 2003.
The percentage in less urbanized nonmetropolitan counties with past year substance abuse or dependence was 8.6% in 2002 and 8.3% in 2003.
The percentage in rural nonmetropolitan counties with past year substance abuse or dependence was 7.5% in 2002 and 5.7% in 2003.

None of these differences were significant at the 0.05 level.
