Figure 5.4 is titled "Annual Numbers of New Users of Tobacco: 1965–2002." It is a line graph, where the horizontal axis represents year, and the vertical axis represents the number of new users, in thousands. There are four lines in the graph that correspond to four types of tobacco: Cigarettes, Daily Cigarettes, Cigars, and Smokeless Tobacco.
The number of new users of cigarettes was 2.8 million in 1965. This increased to 3.5 million in 1972, decreased to 2.4 million in 1986, increased again to 3.3 million in 1997, and then decreased again to 2.7 million new cigarette users in 2001.
The number of new daily cigarette users was 1.5 million in 1965. This number peaked in 1975 at 2.2 million, decreased to 1.3 million in 1989, and then increased again to 2.0 million in 1997. The number of new daily cigarette decreased to 1.4 million persons in 2002.
The number of new users of cigars was 1.0 million in 1965, and remained relatively stable through 1986 (1.2 million new users), when it started increasing. The number of new cigar users peaked at 3.7 million in 1998, and then started decreasing to 3.0 million in 2002.
The number of new smokeless tobacco users was 595,000 in 1965. This peaked at 1.5 million in 1984, and then decreased to 1.0 million in 1987. The number of new smokeless tobacco remained around 1.0 million persons through 2002.
