Figure 4.4 is titled "Past Month Cigarette Use, by Age Group and Gender: 2002 and 2003." It is a bar graph, with the following note below the graph: "Statistically significant differences (at 0.05 level) between 2002 and 2003 are denoted by '+.'" The horizontal axis of the graph represents age in years by gender, and the vertical axis represents the percentage using in the past month. Within each age/gender category there is a bar for 2002 and a bar for 2003. For each age/gender and year combination, the percentage using cigarettes in the past month is as follows:

The percentage of 12-to-17-year-old males with past month cigarette use was 12.3% in 2002 and 11.9% in 2003.
The percentage of 12-to-17-year-old females with past month cigarette use was 13.6% in 2002 and 12.5% in 2003. This is a significant difference at the 0.05 level.
The percent of 18-to-25-year-old males with past month cigarette use was 44.4% in 2002 and 44.2% in 2003.
The percentage of 18-to-25-year-old females with past month cigarette use was 37.1% in 2002 and 36.2% in 2003.
The percentage of males aged 26 years or older with past month cigarette use was 28.3% in 2002 and 27.5% in 2003.
The percentage of females aged 26 years or older with past month cigarette use was 22.5% in 2002 and 22.1% in 2003.
