Research Supplements to Promote Diversity in Health-Related
Research - Established Investigators Who Become Disabled
This supplement enables principal investigators with eligible
NHLBI research grants who become disabled to obtain additional
support to continue their research. Funds may be requested to
make changes or adjustments in the laboratory setting that will
enable the disabled investigator to perform the essential functions
associated with his or her research project and/or to hire an
assistant. Accommodation requests must be reasonable in relationship
to the direct costs of the parent grant.
Who is eligible? All principal investigators at U.S.
institutions with eligible NHLBI research grants who become
disabled
The opportunities? Research
Duration of support? Summer, during the academic year,
or a combination of summer and academic year
Where? At the principal investigator's institution
Applications due? Any time, but no later than 3 months
before the last 2 years remaining on the NHLBI research grant.
- The program is announced annually in the NIH Guide
to Grants and Contracts available by subscription or
by accessing the NIH
Website. Previous announcements can be used to
prepare draft applications since the program requirements
and receipt dates do not change significantly from year
to year.

Support: May request support for special equipment,
an assistant, or other modifications to facilitate reasonable
accommodation to a disabling injury or illness that has occurred
during the current project period.
