Figure 8.5 is titled "Substance Use among Persons Aged 12 or Older, by Major Depressive Episodes in the Past Year: 2004." It is a bar graph, where substance use types are shown on the horizontal axis, and the percent using the substance is shown on the vertical axis. For each substance use type, there is a bar representing those who had a major depressive episode in the past year, and a bar representing those who did not have a major depressive episode in the past year.

The percentage of persons aged 12 or older who used illicit drugs in the past year was 28.8 percent among persons who had an MDE in the past year and 13.8 percent among persons who did not have an MDE in the past year.
The percentage of persons aged 12 or older with daily cigarette use in the past month was 25.5 percent among persons who had an MDE in the past year and 15.1 percent among persons who did not have an MDE in the past year.
The percentage of persons aged 12 or older with past month heavy alcohol use in the past month was 9.2 percent among persons who had an MDE in the past year and 6.9 percent among persons who did not have an MDE in the past year.
