This is a bar chart, where the study year is shown on the horizontal axis, and the number of persons who felt the need for but did not receive specialty treatment for illicit drug use is shown in thousands on the vertical axis. Tests of statistical significance at the .05 level were performed between 2003 and 2004 estimates and between 2002 and 2004 estimates; significant results are indicated where appropriate.

The number of persons aged 12 or older with illicit drug dependence or abuse who felt the need for but did not receive specialty treatment for illicit drug use in the past year was 362,000 in 2002, 426,000 in 2003, and 598,000 in 2004. The differences between the 2004 estimate and the 2002 and 2003 estimates were significant.
