Figure 9.1 is a bar graph showing rates of serious mental illness among adults aged 18 or older, by age and gender in 2002. Among young adults aged 18 to 25, 10.0 percent of males and 16.3 percent of females had SMI. Among adults aged 26 to 49, 6.7 percent of males and 12.2 percent of females had SMI. Among adults aged 50 or older, 3.2 percent of males and 6.3 percent of females had SMI.
