Figure 8.1 is a stacked bar graph that shows the percentages of past year substance dependence or abuse among persons aged 12 or older in 2002. Substance dependence occurred with the following rates: 6.9 percent were dependent on alcohol only, 3.3 percent were dependent on illicit drugs only, and 1.3 percent were dependent on both alcohol and illicit drugs. Substance dependence or abuse occurred with the following rates: 14.9 were dependent on or abused alcohol only, 3.9 were dependent on or abused illicit drugs only, and 3.2 were dependent on or abused both alcohol and illicit drugs.
