Figure 6.1 is a line graph that shows the trend in annual numbers of new users of marijuana for persons aged 12 or older from 1965 to 2001 in three groups: total aged 12 or older, youths aged 12 to 17, and adults aged 18 or older. From 1965 to 1973, the number of marijuana initiates increased for persons aged 12 or older and remained steady until 1978. From 1978 to 1990, the number of marijuana initiates declined, and then from 1990 to 1995, the number of initiates increased. From 1995 until 2001, there was not a consistent trend in the number of new users of marijuana. The graphs for youths aged 12 to 17 and adults aged 18 or older show similar patterns.
