News ReleaseFor Release: October 20, 2008 Fire Restrictions Lifted, Wood Cutting Permits AvailableThe Bureau of Land Management has lifted fire restrictions on North Coast public lands and opened the Lacks Creek area near Arcata to firewood cutting. Wood cutting permits can be purchased at the Arcata Field Office, 1695 Heindon Rd., Arcata. The permits allow wood cutters to remove hardwoods that are already down in designated cutting areas. Cutting live trees or standing dead trees will not be permitted. The permits cost $10 per cord, with a two-cord minimum and a 10-cord maximum. The BLM will provide maps of the areas where wood cutting is allowed, and provide information on cutting regulations. Wood cutters' chainsaws must be equipped with spark arresters in good operating condition. The BLM also recommends that wood cutters carry a fully charged fire extinguisher. Lifting of fire restrictions means that campfires are again allowed on public lands outside of designated campgrounds. Campfire permits are required and are also available at the BLM Arcata Field Office. For more information, contact the BLM Arcata Field Office at (707) 825-2300. - BLM -
