BLM Offers Free Guided Hikes at Sacramento River Natural Area

Outstanding vistas of the Sacramento River and surrounding volcanic landscapes will highlight free guided hikes to be led by the U. S. Bureau of Land Management on Saturday, March 22, and Sunday, April 6, on public land just north of Red Bluff.
 
A BLM natural resource specialist will lead each four-mile trek to the Iron Canyon Rim, a rugged area that is little changed since explorer Jedediah Smith traversed the region in April of 1828.
 
Reservations are required because each hike is limited to 20 participants.  Call the BLM Redding Field Office, (530) 224-2100, to reserve space for either hike.
 
“We will present information about natural resources and the BLM’s management of the Sacramento River Outstanding Natural Area, talk about the history of the region, and hopefully see some wildlife,” said Kelly Williams, the BLM’s Sacramento River Natural Area manager.
 
The four-mile loop hike will take three to four hours, including time for lunch, discussions and enjoying the view.  Hikers should wear sturdy hiking boots, bring a lunch and water and dress for variable weather.  Cameras and binoculars are recommended.
 
Williams said the trail is primitive and rocky and not recommended for those who have trouble negotiating rough terrain.
 
Hikers will meet at 10 a.m. at the Iron Canyon Trailhead on State Highway 36, about 5.5 miles north of the junction with Antelope Blvd. in Red Bluff.
