Hispanic health

From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I'm Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.

Hispanics are a growing part of the population, but a study finds they are not keeping up on key indicators of health.

A researcher at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention checked Hispanic progress on six leading indicators in HHS' Healthy People 2010 objectives for improvements. Pranesh Chowdhury's study was in the journal Ethnicity and Disease.

Chowdhury says that, overall, Hispanics did not meet any of the six targets. These include physical activity, obesity, smoking, binge drinking, and health care coverage.

Chowdhury says policymakers need to target these areas for improvement. But he also says there are some things that people can do as individuals:

"It's very important that Hispanics need to be more physically active, stop binge drinking, no smoking, and control weight to reduce obesity." (nine seconds)
