Diabetes on the rise

From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I'm Ray Sass with HHS HealthBeat.

Unhealthy habits, like over-eating and lack of exercise can raise our risk of getting diabetes.

A study in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine found the rate of new cases of diabetes went up 41 percent between 1997 and 2003.

Researcher Linda Geiss of HHS’ Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that this rate increased with age and was higher among minority populations, but obesity was the major factor in developing the disease.

About one and a half million Americans develop diabetes each year. Geiss advises moderate changes to help delay or prevent its onset.

"We should focus on eating healthier, restricting our calories, not gaining weight and getting more physical activity." (seven seconds)
