Synchrotron Power Now Available in a Convenient Size: Decades ago, computers filled entire rooms. Now they fit easily on or under a desk. In a similar technical advance, scientists from Technologies, Inc. took the functionality of a synchrotron—a facility typically the size of a football stadium—and shrunk it down to the size of a pickup truck. The work is supported by an SBIR and the Protein Structure Initiative. The resulting tool will allow scientists to pursue state-of-the-art synchrotron experiments in their own laboratories and will ease the growing demand for time at the handful of large synchrotrons across the country. The new device is also expected to impact fields ranging from materials science to biomedical imaging.
