This is an increase from the 1993 Part A deductible of $676. A benefit period expires when a patient has not received inpatient care from a hospital or skilled nursing facility for 60 days. If readmitted to a hospital in a new benefit period, the beneficiary would again be responsible for the $696 deductible. HCFA also published 1994 coinsurance rates for extended hospital stays and skilled nursing facility care. For hospitalizations of more than 60 days, beneficiaries will be responsible for a coinsurance payment of $174 per day from the 61st through the 90th day. After 90 days, a beneficiary is entitled to Medicare coverage of up to 60 "reserve days" that can be used only once in a lifetime. The 1994 coinsurance rate for reserve days is set at $348 per day. When a beneficiary needs therapeutic care in a skilled nursing facility after at least three consecutive days of inpatient hospital care, Medicare pays 100 percent of covered expenses for the first 20 days. A coinsurance payment of $87 a day will be required for the 21st through the 100th day.
