Sullivan, M.D., today announced the resignation of the Director of the National Center for Human Genome Research, Dr. James D. Watson. Dr. Watson was a key figure in the creation and development of the project, and has been its director since its inception nearly four years ago. Secretary Sullivan stated, "I wish to thank Dr. Watson for energetic and thoughtful public service that has been so vital to the development of the Human Genome Project. The project is critically important to all men and women who suffer from genetic diseases and conditions. It is certain that this work will eventually result in the relief of untold human suffering." Dr. Bernadine Healy, Director of the National Institutes of Health, which has responsibility for the Human Genome Project, expressed her thanks for Dr. Watson's scientific leadership of this important program. Dr. Watson is one of the world's most renowned biologists and won the Nobel Prize for being a co-discoverer of the double- helix structure of DNA. # # #
