Research Supplements to Promote Diversity
in Health-Related Research for
High School StudentsThis supplement enables principal investigators with
eligible NHLBI research grants or contracts to include high
school students in their projects. Priority is given to applications
requesting support for students with disabilities and/or from
underrepresented racial and ethnic groups.
The research activity proposed for the student must be part
of the approved research for the parent grant or contract,
or a logical extension. The student must be given opportunities
to interact with other individuals on the study and to contribute
to the study.
The program is designed to support high school students who
express an interest in the biomedical or behavioral sciences
and who will devote at least 2 years (two 3-month periods)
to the program. Support should be requested for at least 3
months during any year.
Who is eligible? All principal investigators
at U.S. institutions with eligible NHLBI research grants or
contracts may apply

Duration of support? Summer, part-time during
the academic year, or a combination of summer and academic
year
Where? At the principal investigator's institution
Applications due? Any time, but no later
than 3 months before the last 2 years remaining on the NHLBI
research grant or contract
- The program is announced annually in the NIH Guide
to Grants and Contracts available by subscription or
by accessing the NIH
Website. Previous announcements can be used to
prepare draft applications since the program requirements
and receipt dates do not change significantly from year
to year.

Stipend: Up to $3,000 per year for salary.
Supplies, travel (scientific meetings, home, and/or research
site) and other up to $1,000 per year.
