NCI announces a course for postdoctoral fellows:
Cultural Sensitivity Training (CST).

Overview:
The intramural program of the NCI is one of the largest centers for cancer research in the world, with over 250 Principal Investigators and 900 Postdoctoral Fellows.  Over 50% of the postdoctoral fellows come from
foreign countries, with varying cultural backgrounds.  The Cultural Sensitivity Training (CST) course examines differences in language, and both verbal and non-verbal communication.  Also, verbal styles and expression of emotion will be examined.  The goal of the CST course is to enhance intercultural communication. The participation of NCI PIs, Staff Scientists, Staff Clinicians, Postdoctoral and Clinical Fellows, who work in multicultural environment, is encouraged.

Location and time:
A 2 hour training will be offered on May 9, 2006 from 3-5 p.m. in Bethesda (Bldg. 37, Rooms 6041/6107) followed by a small group tutorial on May 11 at 1-3 p.m. in Bldg. 31, Room 4A52.   A 2 hour training will be offered on May 9, 2006 from 10 a.m.-12 noon in Frederick (Bldg. 549, Executive Board Room) followed by a small group tutorial on May 11 from 9 a.m.-11 a.m in Bldg. 549, Conf. Rm. A.

Certificate
There is no fee for this course. Participants, who register for the course, may receive a certificate of completion after attending the lectures and completing the tutorial.

This training is part of a developing curriculum for training NCI clinical and postdoctoral fellows.  In Sept.-Dec. a 2 hr/week  course in “Translational Research in Clinical Oncology “ (TRACO) is hosted by Dr. T. Moody (moodyt@mail.nih.gov) is offered primarily for postdoctoral fellows.  Also, “Demystifying Medicine for PhDs” has 2 lecture hours/week from January-May and the course is hosted by Dr. Irvin M.
