INFORMATION MEMORANDUM

TO: Head Start and Early Head Start Grantees and their Delegates

SUBJECT: Availability of Resources in Spanish on the Early Childhood Learning and Knowledge Center

INFORMATION:

In July of 2006, the Office of Head Start (OHS) announced the launch of a new interactive web site, the Early Childhood Learning and Knowledge Center (ECLKC). The Office of Head Start is pleased to announce the launch of a new Spanish site map and additional resources in Spanish on the site. The Office of Head Start recognizes the need to support grantees and grantee staff as they engage parents who speak and read a language other than English. The “Spanish version” of the ECLKC reflects the fact that approximately 1 in 4 Head Start children live in households where Spanish is the predominant language spoken.

The resources available have been specifically targeted to Head Start parents and staff working directly with children and families, such as teaching staff, family service workers, and home visitors.

The following resources are now available in Spanish on the ECLKC:

  1. Head Start Program Performance Standards (HSPPS)
  2. FY 2008 OHS Monitoring Protocol
  3. Information Memoranda (IMs) and Program Instructions (PIs)
  4. Steps to Success—selected resources
  5. Head Start Bilingual Glossary—This glossary is used in all national OHS translations, and programs are encouraged to share it with those that translate for their program. The goal of sharing the glossary is to promote consistency as we translate for a diverse Spanish-speaking audience using neutral widely recognized terms in Spanish.

In addition to the centralized location of resources in Spanish, the web site uses an En español icon to signal to the reader that the resource is also available in Spanish.

Policy Clarifications will soon be added to the site. Please check back on the ECLKC as the number of resources in Spanish will continue to grow.
