No. 98-153
August 28, 1998
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold a public meeting Thursday, September 3, in Rockville, Maryland with representatives from the Nuclear Energy Institute, the Union of Concerned Scientists and Public Citizen to discuss possible changes in non-escalated enforcement policy practices.
The meeting will be held in Room 6-B-11 of NRC's headquarters at One White Flint North, 11555 Rockville Pike, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Following introductory remarks and a discussion by the NRC staff of contemplated changes to the agency's enforcement policy and a discussion of utilizing risk insights, representatives from the Nuclear Energy Institute, the Union of Concerned Scientists, Public Citizen and members of the public will have an opportunity to present their views.
The NRC, currently re-evaluating its enforcement policy to reflect the performance of a maturing nuclear industry, is considering changing its policy regarding non-escalated enforcement matters--that is, violations of NRC requirements for which no fines are assessed. The NRC staff plans to submit to the Commission later this year a paper outlining possible enforcement policy changes.
Persons who wish to speak at the meeting should contact James Lieberman, Director of the NRC Office of Enforcement at (301) 415-2741.
