The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is seeking nominations for four positions on its Advisory Committee on the Medical Uses of Isotopes (ACMUI). The Committee, comprised of physicians and scientists, advises the agency on issues involving the medical use of radioactive byproduct material (machine-produced nuclear material) for diagnosis and therapy.

The specific positions now being sought for the Committee are:

• One medical physicist with expertise in sealed source therapy;
• One radiation oncologist;
• One nuclear pharmacist; and
• One radiation safety officer with medical health physics expertise.

ACMUI members must be United States citizens and devote approximately 80 hours per year to committee business. Members are reimbursed for travel and administrative expenses, serve three-year terms, and can be reappointed for an additional three years.

The present composition of the ACMUI is: physician specialists in therapeutic radiology; specialists in nuclear medicine research and nuclear medicine; a nuclear pharmacist; a medical physicist with emphasis in nuclear medicine; a health care administrator; a radiation therapy technologist/medical dosimetrist; and a representative from the Food and Drug Administration.

Candidates for a physician practicing nuclear cardiology, an individual with experience in state regulation of radioisotopes, and a patients' rights and care advocate have been selected and are in the final stages of the approval process.

The position for a therapy medical physicist is vacant, and the position for a radiation safety officer with health physics expertise is new. The position for one radiation oncologist will become vacant on September 30 when the current member's term expires. The position for a nuclear pharmacist will also become vacant next year on September 30 when the current member's term expires.
