NRC TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETING ON REPORTING REQUIREMENTS

FOR NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold a public meeting August 21 in Rockville, Maryland, to discuss proposed regulations that would modify nuclear power plant reporting requirements.

The meeting will be in the auditorium of NRC's headquarters at Two White Flint North, 11545 Rockville Pike, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Following introductory remarks and a discussion by the NRC staff of contemplated changes to the regulations, the meeting will be open for public comments, beginning about 10:00 a.m.

Current NRC regulations specify the types of events and issues that power reactor licensees must report to NRC and the time limits for reporting. The objectives of the rulemaking now under way are to better align the reporting requirements with NRC needs; reduce licensees' reporting burden, where consistent with NRC needs; and clarify the requirements. For example, the time limit for reporting could be adjusted, based on the safety significance of the event or issue and the need for immediate NRC action. NRC published an advance notice of proposed rulemaking on this subject in the July 23 edition of the Federal Register.

Persons who wish to speak at the meeting should contact Dennis P. Allison, Office for Analysis and Evaluation of Operational Data, Washington, D.C. 20555-0001, telephone: 301/415-6835, e-mail: dpa@nrc.gov ; or Bennett M. Brady at the same address, telephone: 301/415-6363, e-mail: bb1@nrc.gov. Registration will be available at the meeting for a limited number of additional speakers.
