CHAIRMAN AND VICE-CHAIRMAN OF NRC'S ADVISORY COMMITTEE

ON NUCLEAR WASTE RE-ELECTED

Dr. B. John Garrick has been re-elected Chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Advisory Committee on Nuclear Waste (ACNW), and Dr. George M. Hornberger, has been re-elected Vice-Chairman. Their terms will expire June 30, 1999.

Dr. Garrick born in Eureka, Utah, received his B.S. degree in physics from Brigham Young University, and received his M.S. degree in engineering, and Ph.D. in engineering and applied science from the University of California. He worked as a physicist for the Atomic Energy Commission from 1955-1957, then worked for the Resource Sciences Corp., from 1957-1975. From 1975, until his retirement, Dr. Garrick served as President and Chief Executive Officer of PLG, Inc., an international engineering, applied science, and management consulting firm. He currently is a consultant specializing in the application of the risk sciences to such fields as nuclear energy, space, defense, chemical, petroleum and transportation.

Dr. Hornberger, born in Ashland, Pennsylvania, received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in civil engineering from Drexel University, and his Ph.D. in hydrology from Stanford University. Dr. Hornberger is the Ernest H. Ern Professor of Environmental Sciences at the University of Virginia, whose faculty he joined in 1970. He has also served as a visiting professor at Stanford University and the United States Geological Survey. Dr. Hornberger currently serves as Chairman of the Commission on Environment, Geosciences, and Resources for the National Research Council.

Other Members of the ACNW are Raymond G. Wymer, Retired Director of Chemical Technology Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, TN.; and Charles Fairhurst, Professor Emeritus, Department of Civil Engineering, University of Minnesota; Senior Engineer, Itasca Consulting Group, Inc., Minneapolis, MN.

The ACNW was established in 1988 to advise the Commission on all aspects of nuclear waste management.
