NRC ANNOUNCES OPPORTUNITY FOR EVIDENTIARY
HEARING ON CALVERT CLIFFS LICENSE RENEWAL

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has announced the opportunity for an evidentiary hearing on a request for renewal of the operating licenses for Units 1 and 2 of the Calvert Cliffs nuclear power plant, operated by Baltimore Gas & Electric Co. (BG&E) near Lusby, Md.

The deadline for hearing requests is August 7. By that time, petitions must be filed by anyone whose interest might be affected by the license renewals.

BG&E is seeking a 20-year extension of the current Calvert Cliffs licenses, which expire on July 31, 2014, for Unit 1 and on August 13, 2016, for Unit 2. The NRC staff has begun reviewing the application and is starting work on an environmental impact statement, which is scheduled for publication next year.

Petitions for a hearing must be filed with the Secretary of the Commission, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington, DC 20555, Attention: Rulemakings and Adjudications Staff. They may also be delivered to the NRC Public Document Room in Washington. A copy of the petition should also be sent to the Office of the General Counsel, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington, DC 20555-0001, and to R. F. Fleishman, General Counsel, Baltimore Gas & Electric Co., P.O. Box 1475, Baltimore, Md. 21203.

Petitions should follow the requirements of Part 2.714, Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations. Copies of this regulation are available at the NRC Public Document Room, 2120 L Street, N.W., Washington, D.C., and at the local public document room for Calvert Cliffs located in the Calvert County Public Library, 30 Duke Street, Prince Frederick, Md.

Hearing petitions will be considered by a designated NRC Atomic Safety and Licensing Board. If a hearing is granted, it will be a legal proceeding open to attendance and observation by the public, but different from any other public meetings which will be held from time to time in the Calvert Cliffs vicinity concerning the license renewal application.

More information about the opportunity for hearing may be found in a notice published in the July 8 edition of the Federal Register.
