NOTE TO EDITORS:

Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will have a press availability on Thursday, July 9, to answer questions concerning renewal of the Calvert Cliffs nuclear power plant's operating license. The plant is located in Lusby, Md., and operated by Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) Company.

Agency staff will meet with interested reporters at 12:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Select in Solomons, Md., in the Grove Point Room.

The NRC staff has scheduled two public environmental scoping meetings for that same day at the same location on BGE's application to renew its license for the two-reactor facility. The first session will begin at 2 p.m. and continue until 5 p.m.; the second will get under way at 7 p.m. and continue until 10 p.m.

Members of the public are invited to attend either meeting and comment on any environmental issues the NRC should consider in its review of the proposed license renewal.

Calvert Cliffs is the first U.S. commercial nuclear power plant to apply for an extension of its NRC operating license.
