NOTE TO EDITORS:

Four subcommittees of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards (ACRS) have scheduled meetings next month in Rockville, Maryland.

The meetings, which will be open to public observation, will be held at the NRC's Two White Flint North Building at 11545 Rockville Pike.

-- The subcommittee on Safety Research Program will meet at 8:30 a.m. June 1 to discuss SECY-98-076, "Core Research Capabilities," and related matters. The meeting will begin at 8;30 a.m. in Room T-2B3.

-- The subcommittee on Materials and Metallurgy will meet June 1 to discuss the NRC staff's concerns regarding the changes to Class 1,2, and 3 piping system design requirements contained in the 1994 Addenda of Section III of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, and the status of resolution of these concerns by the ASME Special Working Group on Seismic Rules. The meeting will begin at 1:30 p.m. in Room T-2B3.

-- The subcommittee on Thermal-Hydraulic Phenomena will meet June 2 to review the General Electric Company extended power uprate plan for operating boiling water reactors, and the lead-plant (Monticello Nuclear Generating Station) power uprate application. The meeting will begin at 8:30 a.m. in Room T-2B3.

-- The subcommittee on Planning and Procedures will meet June 2 to discuss proposed ACRS activities and related matters. The meeting will begin at 12:00 noon in Room T-2B1.

Other aspects of each meeting, including an opportunity for public comment, will be described in a Notice of Meeting to be published in forthcoming editions of the Federal Register.
