NRC SENIOR MANAGEMENT ASSIGNMENTS ANNOUNCED

L. Joseph Callan, Executive Director for Operations (EDO) of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, today announced the following assignments of senior managers, effective July 5:

Ashok C. Thadani, who has been acting Deputy EDO for Regulatory Effectiveness, will return to the position of Director of the Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research.

Dr. Malcolm R. Knapp, who has been acting Director of the Office of Nuclear Reactor Research, will return to the position of Deputy Director of the Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards (NMSS).

Margaret V. Federline, a senior manager in NMSS, will become the Deputy Director of the Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research.

William F. Kane, acting Deputy Director of NMSS, will return to the position of Director of the NMSS Spent Fuel Project Office.

Dr. William D. Travers, currently Director of the Special Project Office in the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation (NRR), will succeed Mr. Thadani as Deputy EDO for Regulatory Effectiveness. After assuming this new post in July, Dr. Travers will, if necessary, continue to provide senior management support for a period of time to ensure an effective transition of the NRC's oversight of the Millstone plants in Connecticut.

Mr. Thadani has been in the acting EDO post since August of last year. Since joining NRC in 1974 as a reactor engineer, he has held a series of progressively more responsible positions. He became Director of the Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research last June. Mr. Thadani is a graduate of the University of Tennessee and holds a master's degree in chemical engineering from Catholic University of America.

At the time of his appointment as acting head of the NRC's research office last August, Dr. Knapp had been Deputy Director of NMSS since March 1995. An NRC staff member since 1979, he received bachelor's and master's degrees from Johns Hopkins University and his doctorate at Carnegie-Mellon University.

Ms. Federline is currently Deputy Director of the Division of Waste Management in NMSS, a post she has held since 1995. A graduate of West Virginia University, she was a staff member of the National Institute of Standards and Technology before joining NRC in 1981.

Since joining NRC's predecessor agency, the Atomic Energy Commission, in 1973, Mr. Kane has held positions in both NRC headquarters and in the Region I office in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, where he was Deputy Regional Administrator for nearly seven years. He was appointed director of the NMSS Spent Fuel Project Office in February 1997 and was named Acting Deputy Director of NMSS last August. A graduate of Widener University, he has done graduate work in nuclear engineering at Catholic University.

In his capacity as Director of the NRR Special Project Office since November 1996, Dr. Travers has been responsible for the agency's oversight of the three-unit Millstone station in Connecticut. He has held progressively more responsible positions since joining NRC in 1976 as a radiological physicist intern. He is a graduate of Purdue University, where he received a doctorate in 1976 after completing graduate studies in health physics and nuclear engineering.
