NEWS ANNOUNCEMENT: RIII-98-55

November 25, 1998

NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION TO MEET NOV. 30 IN MARYLAND

ON STATUS OF COOK NUCLEAR PLANT REPAIRS AND IMPROVEMENTS

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will meet November 30 with representatives of American Electric Power Company to discuss the status of repair and improvement activities at the D. C. Cook Nuclear Power Station. The two-reactor plant is located near Bridgman, Michigan.

The Commission meeting will be at 2 p.m. EST (1 p.m. CST) at the NRC Headquarters, 11555 Rockville Pike, Rockville, Maryland.

News media representatives may also view the meeting by video conference at the NRC's Region III Office, 801 Warrenville Road, Lisle, Illinois.

American Electric Power shut down both D. C. Cook units in September of last year after an NRC design inspection raised questions about how past plant modifications had been controlled and reviewed.

Additional problems were also found in the utility's inspection and maintenance of an important safety system, the ice condenser system, and with the control of debris and other foreign material in the reactor containment that might affect plant safety systems. (The ice condenser system is designed to prevent excessive pressure that might damage the reactor containment during a possible accident.)

The units have remained shut down while the utility performed extensive reviews and modifications of the plant. Inspections and repairs of the ice condensers are still under way.

The plant will not resume operation until deficiencies are corrected. Further NRC inspections will be conducted to assure that problems are corrected and that the facility is ready for restart.
