NRC STAFF TO MEET WITH COMMONWEALTH EDISON COMPANY

TO DISCUSS STARTUP OF UNIT 1 AT LASALLE NUCLEAR STATION

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will meet Friday, July 24, with Commonwealth Edison Company officials to discuss the readiness for Unit 1 at the LaSalle Nuclear Power Station to resume operation. The plant, which has two reactors, is located near Seneca, Illinois.

The meeting will be at 10:00 a.m. at Brookfield Township Hall, 2099 East 27th Road, Seneca, Illinois. The meeting is open to public observation. NRC officials will be available at the close of the meeting for questions and comments from the general public and news media.

The two LaSalle units have been shut down since September 1996 for equipment modification and maintenance, staff retraining, and other performance improvement activities. The utility is currently planning to begin Unit 1 startup activities at the end of this month. The Unit 2 startup schedule is about six months after Unit 1.

In April of last year, the NRC staff issued a Confirmatory Action Letter to Commonwealth Edison, confirming the utility's agreement to develop a plan to address the plant's performance deficiencies and to meet with the NRC staff when the first unit was ready for restart.

The NRC has been conducting a special team inspection to assess the readiness of Unit 1 to resume operations. The results of that inspection and other recent NRC inspections will be discussed at the July 24 meeting.
