NEWS ANNOUNCEMENT: RIII-98-21

March 25, 1998

NRC SCHEDULES TWO MEETINGS AT QUAD CITIES NUCLEAR PLANT

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has scheduled two meetings Friday at the two-unit Quad Cities Nuclear Power Station located in Cordova, Illinois.

Both meetings, open to public observation, will be held in the Training Building at the plant site, which is at 22712 206th Avenue North, Cordova. NRC officials will be available afterwards to speak with the news media and members of the public.

At 8 a.m., NRC officials will meet with representatives of Commonwealth Edison Company, operator of the facility, to discuss the results of a special NRC design inspection at the plant.

The inspection, which began on February 16, will conclude on Friday. The six-member inspection team is led by Morris Branch from the NRC's headquarters office in Rockville, Maryland, and includes five contract employees from the engineering firm of Stone & Webster. A written inspection report detailing the team's findings will be available later this year.

Design inspections focus on reviews of a plant's original design and configuration and the utility's conformance with the plant's safety analysis report. The NRC is conducting a number of these special inspections at facilities throughout the United States.

At 1 p.m., NRC officials will meet with Commonwealth Edison Co. officials to discuss plans to start up Quad Cities Unit 2 and other issues affecting the station.

The two Quad Cities reactors are shut down while the utility upgrades its procedures and systems which would be used to shut down the plant safely in the event of a fire.
