NEWS ANNOUNCEMENT III-98-15

February 24, 1998

NRC STAFF TO DISCUSS QUAD CITIES PLANT PERFORMANCE MARCH 3;

REGIONAL ADMINISTRATOR TO BRIEF NEWS MEDIA FOLLOWING MEETING

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will meet Tuesday, March 3, with Commonwealth Edison Co. officials to discuss the NRC's review of the performance of the Quad Cities Nuclear Power Station. The meeting will at the nuclear plant near Cordova, Illinois.

The meeting will be in the Training Building at the plant site, which is at 22712 206th Avenue North, Cordova. It is open to public observation.

Following the meeting, NRC Regional Administrator A. Bill Beach will brief the news media on current NRC inspection activities at the Quad Cities Station. The two Quad Cities reactors are shut down while the utility upgrades its procedures and systems which would be used to safely shut down the plant in the event of a fire that disabled plant equipment.

The performance review, called the Systematic Assessment of Licensee Performance (SALP), was issued by the NRC on January 30 (see NRC News Announcement III-98-11). The plant was rated as "good" in operations and plant support and "acceptable" in maintenance and engineering.
